I’ve loved writing and reading since I can first remember. My parents were avid readers; I grew up with books. I’ve made a living from writing – journalism and marketing – for decades.

I also have a passion for politics and 20th century European history, particularly that of Germany, which has many warnings for what’s happening today.

The past helps us understand the present, says Professor Peter Stearns. “Only through studying history can we grasp how things change; only through history can we begin to comprehend the factors that cause change; and only through history can we understand what elements of an institution or a society persist despite change.”

Historical thrillers combine my passions. Novels set between and during the world wars are my favourites because they entertain, enlighten and enable us to visit another time.

My first novel, Karl’s War, is the story of one man’s journey during the rise of the Nazis and Occupied France.
